What about Pit Bulls?
"I define breed prejudice the same way I do racial prejudice-----
both are based on fear and ignorance"
Ceasar Millan wrote in his book "Be A Pack Leader"
That has to be one of the best lines I have ever read.
*************************
One might walk down the street and upon seeing a rather large - burly man walking towards
them with a face that looks mean. He is not well dressed either.  What happens next?  One
assumes this is a person to be wary of, to stay away from.  Some may go so far as to beleive
this person is most likely a bad guy, a threat,  one that will harm them thus the fear builds in
their body and mind right away..
This guy could be what one assumes or he could be the nicest - most caring person you have
ever met.   But -- that is people for you.   Not all of them of course.. But most will make
assumptions like this due to many things.  After all - they seen what criminals and bad guys
look like on TV..
They are basically intimidated by BIGGER people and more intimidated by a face that might
look rough to them.
So what's the deal here?  Is the big, mean looking guy to blame for this?
Of course not.  Its the other persons  insecurity (fear) and lack of knowledge about this man
that is the problem..    Fear and ignorance.

So when it comes to dogs its no different..  The cute little poodle who had bitten you 5 times is
ok. But the Pit Bull who a visually strong dog with what some might call a mean looking face is
automatically seen as a threat by many.  Nothing but an assumption..
All big, mean looking guys are bad --All Pit Bulls are bad.   =  Ignorance!!!
Thank goodness Dogs don't consider this way of thinking.
There is no prejudice among dogs.  You are who you are unless you prove differently.
What do you see here???
Pit Bull Aggression?
Pit Bull Play?
If it were not for the 3rd dog on the bottom you might - for sure - think aggression.
Actually its just our 3 pits doing what they do on the couch in the evening.. Playing.
In the 70's it was the German Shepherd --- The 80's it was the Doberman
The 90's it was the Rottweiler and since that its the Pit Bull.
FACT
Out of the estimated 53 million dogs in the US -- 92 fatal attacks are contributed to Pit Bulls
or Pit Bull Mixes from 1965 to 2001. (2 of those were Staffordshire Terriers and not Pit
Bulls)
53 million dogs --- 92 fatal attacks out of 431 attacks that span a 37 year period.
Now I ask you, after looking at the numbers do we have a dangerous dog problem?

And its a wonder its not more considering that Pit Bulls are abused, sold to irresponsible
owners, the favorite dog of drug dealers, street gangs and people turning them into fighing
dogs.  This is by far the most damaging part of the problem.
*******************
"Pit Bulls are different.  They are infectious with their energy and their
willingness to suffer the abuses of society and come back with a big goofy grin
and a tongue lying in wait to lick the first face that gets close enough."  " They are
different for sure.  They expose humans for the cruel and inhumane beasts we are
and we don't like it."
